Found Objects: In the cookbook
In October 2013
Penelope Cole gave Elizabeth David's On Vegetables - a compendium cookbook - to Moira to celebrate her marriage in October; and inscribed a message on the inside leaf.
In June 2023
Sally Compton received a postcard from Janet complaining about the tourists in Antibes. And left the postcard in the same cookbook. How did the cookbook come to be in her possession?
Also in the cookbook was a blank greeting card; on which a Mr P Stafford had painted Lowry-esque gaucheries. He had the image of his visog on the back; in the form of a tiny monotone woodblock print of himself. In the print he also had a beard, a fedora and was wearing glasses. What was he was wanting to convey with this print?
And was the original message.. "to Moria for her marriage".. an echo of some trad wife absurdism or an early warning that Gilead was already raising its fundamentalist carcass?
Finally, who was Mr Stafford and how did Sally, Moria, Penelope and Janet fit into this?
